Yattarna is local indigenous meaning gradually, reflecting the time spent refining the cuvee before it's inaugural vintage. Bin number 144 is derived from the total number of trials undertaken in the wine's development. The aspiration and independence of mind that the late Max Schubert brought to Penfolds winemaking philosophy inspired the winery to embark on the project of creating a white wine that would one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange. The northerly facing slope on Mark O'Leary's Benwerrin Vineyard, at Oakbank in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, is planted to a very special block of twenty year old Chardonnay vines. The extravagance of French oak barrel ferments, malolactic and lees stirring battonage, over the course of several months, enhances the generosity of fruit, while adding layers of complexity and creamy, yeasty autolysis richness.

Nest Egg are only ever made from the most exceptional years, a few hundred cases of the finest Adelaide Hills vintage, each bottle is individually numbered. Treated to the luxury of wild yeasts and full malolactic, lees stirring battonage and nine months of age in quality French oak, a structured and concentrated Chardonnay of amazing sophistication and superior length. Marble Hill was a stately old manor in the Adelaide Hills, the colonial Governor’s summer residence. Planted to a unique clone of Burgundy Chardonuet in the 1860s, the ancient vines came to the attention of the legendery David Wynn, who removed cuttings back to Mountadam, the oldest cool climate Chardonnay vines on the continent. The original stocks in Burgundy were wiped out by phylloxera and Marble Hill was destroyed by fire in the 1950s. There truly is no Chardonnay in the world like Marble Hill.

From the best parcels of fruit grown to the High Eden Ridge Estate vineyard, these are the earliest plantings of Chardonnay in South Austraia and some of the oldest in the country. The east facing escarpment rises 550 metres above sea level and separates the dramatically cooler Eden Valley, providing a myriad of interesting mesoclimates and vineyards which have been refined over time, along with the winemaking. Mike Press is one of the nation's most experienced winemakers. After a long and distinguished career, which began under the tutelage of the legendary Max Schubert, Mike settled on a site at Lobethal in Adelaide Hills to grow grapes during a term of semi retirement. He chose his ground well, he lives comfortably amongst the vines and is delighted every year with harvests of the finest fruit. The undulating aspects and favourable mesoclimes of Mike's vineyard yield a quality of Chardonnay which has been repeatedly listed in the illustrious Halliday 1OO.

The Adelaide Hills are a place of breathtaking natural beauty, native gums flourish with wild abandon amongst the closely husbanded Longview vines, a sight rarely seen in Australian viticulture. An assemblage of four vineyard sites, chosen for their unique capacity to construct a wine that is so much greater than the sum of parts. For twenty years, Kellermeister have been perfecting the Chardonnay, fashioned to be a chaste wine from exclusively free run juices. Virgin offers a great depth of fruit driven flavours with a touch of herbaceousness in wonderfully unoaked styling.

Vintage 2005 for the Country Selection Chardonnay brought sensational ripeness and good acid balance to the grapes, from a season characterised by cool and moderate conditions in February to April. Small parcels of refined, delicate Mount Gambier and generous, tightly structured Adelaide Hills fruit were included in the blend to compliment the elegant, fine citrus flavours derived from the Coonawarra fruit. The Coonawarra Chardonnay parcels were picked early to retain the delicate regional varietal citrus flavours, tight structure and good length.

Jacobs Creek are known for their attractive, medium bodied Chardonnay, a deliciously nectarine flavoured wine, highly appealing for it's purity of fruit, elegance and finesse. As the retention of primary varietal characters are the main objective, the ferment is clarified and inoculated to neutral wine yeasts. Post fermentation, components are treated to a rich, extended lees contact and a touch of malolactic which adds complexity.

McLaren Vale is famous for its Mediterranean clime, ideal growing conditions which yield a distinct genre of Chardonnay, gentle and fruit forward with exemplary balance. Ingoldby can boast the Midas touch with Chardonnay, fashioned to the traditional McLaren Vale style, always displaying lovely elegance and finesse, a rejuvenating wine of focus and length. The citrus, nectarine and soft creamy buttery finish makes Ingoldby the perfect Chardonnay to accompany fresh white fleshed fishes, which we should all be eating twice weekly.

Grazing pastures invariably make the most auspicious soils for winegrowing. Hugo owe their splendid provenance to a mixed farm which ran sheep and assorted cattle, dairy and tomatoes, almonds and of course grapes. Chardonnay vineyards came much later, but McLaren Vale, influenced by balmy maritime climes and populated by olive groves, is highly favourable to white grapes. Hugo choose to frame the natural charm of McLaren Vale Chardonnay with a supple touch of oak, allowing the fruit to speak for itself, a ripe peach and nectarine style, perfect for chicken caesar or salade niçoise.

Hill-Smith are pioneers of new world viticulture, a first family of Australian wine, they have spent generations husbanding the original Burgundian clones of Chardonnay on choice sites on the Adelaide Hills. A collation of parcels, selectively picked off choice sites throughout Eden Valley, are all managed by a canon of long term owner growers who specialize in Chardonnay, presenting a rich tapestry of flavours to create individuality in the finished wine. A variety of clones are treated to a wild indigenous yeast ferment and a term of age in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques, before the final assemblage.

A voluminous, golden oaked Chardonnay from a precious block of superior vines, treated to the luxury of a year's maturation in a rich proportion of new French barriques. A beautiful bouquet like an Adelaide Hills spring in full bloom, the peaches, melons and nectarine of early morning market garden, the fragrant saute of leeks in warm butter. Redolent of the succulence and chantilly from good French oak, its serious palate weight and volume of fruit, making a multi dimensional Chardonnay style to match robust white meats, Veau au vin blanc and crispy crackling pork.

Heggies could be called struggle country, the vines are shy bearing within an extreme environment, for grapes of intense flavour. There are seven different clones, three favoured French Bernard variants make up the majority. Younger plantings are trained to a vertical shoot position, older vines are grown on a two wire framework, ensuring a range of characters from each harvest. Hand picking and gentle whole bunch pressing minimise the extractions and preserves natural fruit aromas. A completely natural, wild yeast ferment is followed by a year's maturation in a high proportion of new French oak barriques.

Chardonnay is the Heggies Vineyard flagship, a wine that truly bears the stamp of an exceptional Eden Valley site. Closely planted Burgundian clones form the backbone of the Heggies style and create an extremely low yielding viticultural environment which requires careful management but rewards with an outstanding quality of fruit. Natural ferments through wild indigenous yeasts, oxidative handling, a judicious malolactic and the finest French oak, all add to the individuality of the wine, an excellent minerality which contributes to the luxurious length, wondrous texture and sublime finesse.

Fruit from healthy vineyards specialized in yielding grapes to specification, early ripening and disease free, is selected to make the Hardy No-additives range of wines. Barrel fermentation introduces subtle oak complexity onto the palate, whilst maintaining a reductive environment (non-oxidising) for the wine through contact with sedimentery yeast lees (for heightened flavour profiles). Utilizing innovative preservatives-free vinification, Hardy have been able to craft a wine without the use of any additives, purely for the enjoyment of good Chardonnay.

Thomas Hardy crafted his first dual region wine in 1865, assembling harvests from the Adelaide Plains with those of southern districts. Hardy believed that an alchemy of fruit with different characteristics would complement and enhance the integrity of the assembled wine. So began Hardys rich heritage, as with each new blend, a unique code was created starting from A001. Chardonnay is sourced from superior vineyards which can yield the outstanding quality of fruit that's essential for the HRB moniker.

Since it's inaugural release in 1993, Grosset has made a powerful statement about the potential of Piccadilly Valley, an Adelaide Hills subregion that's so cool, it is often considered marginal for wine. It's an area that takes time to understand but the wines can be exquisite. Piccadilly is deliberately restrained. Succulent white peach, melon and grapefruit characters create a mineral, focused wine that's fresh and refined.
